1978 HOLDEN HZ GTS for sale
Price: POA
AUCTION: 6th - 15th MAY
Chicane Auctions is proud to offer this genuine two-owner 1978 Holden HZ GTS, showing just 80,888 kilometres and retaining its original matching-numbers driveline. Supplied with its original Holden factory service books, this example is a true survivor with exceptional provenance.
Highly optioned from new, it features the desirable L31 5.0-litre V8 paired with a Turbo 400 automatic transmission, factory air conditioning, power steering, and distinctive Holden dealer-optioned hand-painted stripes.
With a fully documented and verified history from new, this HZ GTS is an outstanding and very collectible example of Holdens final Kingswood based GTS V8.
MODEL OVERVIEW
The Holden HZ GTS represents the final and finest iteration of the Kingswood-based GTS lineage an iconic Australian muscle car that stood out for its improved driving dynamics.
Introduced in late 1977, the HZ GTS featured the now-famous four-headlight grille, aggressive front and rear Spoilers, and the acclaimed Radial Tuned Suspension (RTS) package.
Fitted as standard with four-wheel disc brakes, a full GTS sports instrumentation dashboard, factory alloy wheels with radial tyres, and a more refined interior layout, the HZ GTS offered an ideal mix of luxury and performance.
Initially released with engine options including the 4.2L and 5.0L V8s, by June 1978, the L31 5.0-litre V8 became the standard powerplantcementing the cars appeal to performance-minded buyers.
With production ceasing in December 1978 and just 1,438 units built, the HZ GTS marked the end of the Kingswood-based four-door GTS era, closing a celebrated chapter in Holden history.
MECHANICAL
Under the bonnet lies the original matching-numbers QT-coded L31 5.0-litre V8, paired with its factory Turbo-Hydramatic 400 transmission. The engine remains in completely standard condition and has been carefully maintained, with the vendor running the car every three months over the past 25 years to ensure mechanical health.
Only standard serviceable items have been replaced throughout its lifebrake components, exhaust system, and most recently, a radiator flush and air-conditioning compressor change over.
The car remains in excellent running order and was driven from South-East Victoria directly into the Chicane showroom for this auction.
EXTERIOR
This HZ GTS retains its original, accident-free bodywork together with its factory-applied paint now showing flaking and lots of aged patina.
While surface rust is visible in some small exposed areas, it remains light, with no bubbling or deterioration found in sills or floor pans.
Panel alignment is excellent throughout, and all original side and rear glass is unmarked. The windscreen is a little average being a country car.
Impressively, the inner door jambs, bonnet and boot paint remain factory fresh and highly unblemished.
INTERIOR
The cabin of this HZ GTS presents in astonishing original excellent condition, offering a true look back into Holdens late 1970s design.
The dashboard, gauges and switchgear are in showroom-quality condition, while the original seats, carpets, and headlining show minimal wear and appear virtually untouched.
A testament to its preservation, even the original dash clock still ticks, capturing the essence of what makes this example so special.
The tartan interior must be seen to be fully appreciated.
