AUCTION - 1966 FORD LOTUS CORTINA
A benchmark example of the Series 1 FordLotus Cortina homologation special has arrived at Chicane Auctions, set to feature in the upcoming May Auction.
From mid-1965 through to the final year of production in 1966, the Lotus Cortina evolved into a far more durable and resolved performance car, benefiting from a series of significant body and driveline revisions introduced after its initial conception.
At its core remained the rev happy Lotus 1.6-litre twin-cam engine, derived from the Lotus Elan. Featuring an aluminium dual overhead camshaft head on Fords proven five-bearing block and fed by twin Weber 40 DCOE carburettors, the package delivered approximately 105 bhp providing strong performance in a lightweight platform.
For 1966, the model reflected key engineering changes introduced during late 1965 production. Most notably, the earlier Lotus-designed rear suspension system was replaced with a more conventional and far more durable leaf spring arrangement with radius rods, retaining Lotus-specific tuning while improving reliability for both road and competition use.
The bodyshell also evolved accordingly. Unlike the earliest cars, 1966 examples utilised an all steel body construction, while incorporating structural revisions to suit the revised suspension layout. A distinctive feature was the modified boot floor, which incorporated a raised hump section to provide clearance for the differential under the lowered rear suspension geometry a detail closely associated with Lotus Cortina development.
Suspension remained Lotus-tuned throughout, with revised MacPherson strut front geometry, uprated anti-roll bar, and better servo-assisted Girling 16P disc brakes delivering sharp handling and stronger braking performance.
The drivetrain continued to evolve during this period, with earlier bullet nose close-ratio gearboxes giving way to stronger Ford Type E units reflecting the models transition toward improved usability.
Visually, the Lotus Cortina remained unmistakable. Finished in Ermine White with signature Sherwood Green side stripes, complemented by quarter bumpers, unique badging and wider steel wheels, it stands as one of the most recognisable performance sedans of the era.
Inside, the cabin adopted a more refined specification, with revised instrumentation and improved trim, while retaining a distinctly driver-focused layout.
Balancing motorsport pedigree with improved practicality, the 1966 Lotus Cortina represents the most usable and developed evolution of the original homologation concept and remains one of the most significant performance sedans of the 1960s.
This particular example is in Exceptional Condition and will be offered as part of Chicane Auctions upcoming May auction.
