AUCTION 1965 FORD CORTINA GT500
A genuine homologation Australian Touring Car icon is set to be on the block at Chicane Auctions.
Developed under the direction of Harry Firth through Ford Australias competition program, the GT500 was purpose-built for endurance racing and was engineered specifically for the demands of Mount Panorama for the Armstrong 500 at Bathurst.
Built in ultra limited numbers with just over 100 examples built to meet homologation requirements, the GT500 incorporated a series of competition-driven upgrades that set it apart.
At its core was a performance version of Fords 1500cc 5-bearing Kent engine, uprated with a modified camshaft, ported cylinder head, strengthened valve train with double valve springs, and a lightened flywheel. Induction was via a tuned Weber carburettor, lifting output to approximately 9598 bhp and these units could rev out to 7000 rpm all day.
Endurance capability was central to the GT500s design. A long-range fuel system with twin fillers allowed rapid refuelling, complemented by additional capacity to minimise pit stops over 500 miles.
The drivetrain featured a close-ratio Lotus 4-speed gearbox, while the chassis received strengthening throughout, including reinforced mounting points and competition-focused suspension revisions.
Distinctive alloy front brake cooling ducts were fitted to improve braking performance under sustained load - one of the GT500s most recognisable visual signatures.
That engineering was proven correct in 1965, when Barry Seton and Midge Bosworth drove a Cortina GT500 to outright 1st place at Bathurst - cementing its place in Australian motorsport history.
Raw, lightweight and purpose-built, the GT500 remains one of the most significant early competition Fords produced in Australia, with surviving examples tightly held and rarely presented to market.
